JANUARY 22, 2019
The January 22nd meeting was called to order by President Bill. Joe made a motion to accept the minutes. It was seconded by Ken and passed.
Bill Lowery reported we have $1196.05 in the General Fund, $2312.40in Youth and Community and $4196.42 in savings. He also passed out an expense report for last year’s wine taste and speech tournament. He advised we should remove Pete Frazier from the roster. He has moved to Florida and has not paid his dues. Ken made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. It was seconded by Joe and passed.
A discussion was held on whether to continue with the wine taste. The tickets are already printed but we would only be out forty dollars. It was decided we would go forth with the wine taste but we need more advertising and everyone including the members not present need to sell more tickets. We have reservations for 150 people and we pay for that much food whether that many come or not. It was decided not to tell people they can buy tickets at the door. This will be for walk-ups only. Janet needs to know in advance how many people are coming so she knows how much food to order. It was also suggested that we lower the count to 120 instead of 150. We can wait until closer to the date to decide. It will be held on Friday, April 26th.
ESSAY / ORATORICAL
Bill Lowery and Joann Sulenski gave an update on the essay contest and oratorical contest. Eighty students have signed up for the essay contest. We will provide the topic since none of the students will participate at the national level. It will be held in February.
Thirty-four students have expressed an interest in the oratorical contest but we need to get it down to around 20 due to time restraints. The winner will go straight to the finals since the other zones have no entries. The contest will not be divided by gender this year; therefore, we can send two boys, two girls or one of each. The contest will be held in March.
The winners from the essay contest, the oratorical contest and the respect for law contest will be honored at our April meeting.
The Zone meeting will be on February 19th at the Magic Tree Pub in Boardman. Cocktail hour is at 6:00 and dinner at 6:30. Bill needs to know by the 13th if you are planning to attend.
Pete was not present but he is working on a membership drive. He wants to start a contest. He will tell us more about it at the next meeting.
The January drawing for the 50/50 raffle was held. We only sold $390 this time so the winner received $195. Julie Gunger won.
Myrna will be responsible for dessert in February.
The meeting was closed with the Optimist Creed
